The Positive Benefits of Social Media

by Iyana Best

Social media is a big part of many people’s lives today. From kids and teens to adults, people all over the world use apps like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and X to talk, share, and stay connected.

In 2025, social media is more than just for fun. It helps people learn new things, stay in touch with friends and family, and can benefit financially. It’s changing the way we live and talk to each other in good ways.

One of the best things about social media is that it helps people stay connected no matter where they are. Friends and family can talk through messages, video calls, or comments, even if they live far apart. Social media also helps people stay updated during emergencies or big events. For example, Social media has helped me keep in contact with my best friend from elementary school. Her name is Zyan, and we stayed friends even after we graduated elementary. I then moved with my dad in the Bronx, so me and Zyan separated during middle school. Even though that was hard for us, we still talk almost everyday through Snapchat. I asked her how social media can be a positive benefit in her life, and she said, “if it weren't for snapchat, we probably wouldn't talk as much. Now that we send each other videos, voice notes, and stay updated with each other's posts, it feels like we’re still hanging out, just through the phone.” That really shows how much social media helps people stay close, even when life changes.

Social media can also be really helpful for school and learning. Teachers sometimes post class updates, videos, or helpful tips online. Students can use it to ask questions, study together, or find new ways to understand hard topics. Many people learn new skills on apps like YouTube or TikTok, whether it’s how to do math problems, write better essays, or even learn a new language. To get another point of view, I interviewed my favorite teacher Ms. Aisha from my old high school. She was my English Teacher and cheer coach. I asked her how social media can positively benefit her students. She said, “I’ve seen students use social media in really smart ways. Some of them share study tips or follow accounts that help with their education or even SAT prep. It can be a great tool when used right.” That made me realize how much learning can happen outside the classroom when students are using the internet in a positive way.

Another big benefit of social media is that it gives people the chance to earn money or grow their own business. A lot of teens and young adults post content on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram and can make money from views, sponsors, or selling products. Some people show off their art, music, or crafts, and others sell clothes or start small online shops. Social media helps people turn hobbies into jobs, and they don’t need a lot of money to get started. Even small businesses use it to find new customers by posting cool videos or pictures of what they sell. It’s a creative and easy way to grow an audience and make some extra income.

Even though social media has a lot of benefits, it’s important to remember that it should be used in a smart and healthy way. Spending too much time online can lead to things like stress, less sleep, or comparing yourself to others. It’s easy to feel pressure to look perfect or always seem happy, which isn’t always real life. That’s why it's important to take breaks and make sure you're using social media in a way that makes you feel good, not worse.

There’s also the issue of fake news or negative content. Sometimes people post things that aren’t true or try to spread hate. That’s why it's important to think before you share something and to treat others with kindness online. Apps and websites are working harder to stop bullying and remove harmful content, but users also have a role to play in making social media a safer space.
