The History of Basketball

Updated: Jun 3

by Jasire Bilal

My article will be about the history of basketball. Throughout the years the history of basketball has changed A LOT. One reason why I say this is because after people discovered basketball it became more popular and more advanced. Another reason why I believe that the history of basketball has changed a lot.

The game of basketball started in 1891 at the International YMCA training center in Springfield, Massachusetts. The inventor of basketball was James Naismith. Naismith used two peach baskets nailed to the gym's lower balcony rail as goals and a soccer ball.

One way in which the game of basketball has changed is before we didn’t have 3 pointers. Another way basketball changed is because before there wasn’t a lot of dunking.

Carl used to be a New York City high school basketball player in the 1990s and is now an educator. When I interviewed Carl, he said, “the skill set is better, the young guys have a better skill set then the older guys.” He also believes that “the coaching has opened up more opportunities.”

Leticia is a former basketball player for Forsyth Satellite Academy. In an interview with Leticia, she said “the players over the decades have changed.” She also believes that “basketball has changed because the game’s technology has changed and it's more advanced.” Before there wasn’t no shot clocks or scoreboards.

Another way basketball has changed is the MVP’s over the years. All the MVP’s lately haven’t been American. Shai, Jokic, Giannis, and Embiid are all European or foreign born.
