As a teen trying to get a job, why is it so complicated?

Don't you think it's been a struggle? As a teenager trying to get a job, it can feel confusing and frustrating. Some people say that job opportunities for teens are easy to find and that getting hired isn’t that hard. But many teenagers would disagree. They say that even though there are jobs out there, it’s difficult to actually get hired because employers keep turning them down. So why does this happen?

One big reason might be experience. Many jobs ask for previous work experience, but most teens are just starting out. It feels unfair because how are teenagers supposed to gain experience if no one is willing to give them a chance? This creates a cycle where teens want to work and build skills, but they can’t get hired without already having experience. Another reason could be that employers sometimes see teens as less reliable or less skilled than older workers.

The statistics also show that this is a real issue. In one article, it states that young workers in New York City between the ages of 16 and 24 faced a 13.2 percent unemployment rate in 2024. This was 3.6 percentage points higher than in 2019 and higher than all other age groups. This proves that teens and young adults are having a harder time finding jobs compared to older workers.

Overall, while job opportunities may seem available, actually getting hired as a teen can be challenging. Lack of experience, employer concerns, and higher unemployment rates all play a role. Teens want to work and gain skills, but they need employers to give them a fair chance first.
